USP and FGV publish study sent to INPI-Brazil against software patents

Brazil's USP FLOSS Competence Center (CCSL-USP) and the CTS-FGV joined forces to develop a comprehensive study and sent, on May 15th 2012, a position paper to INPI (the Brazilian National Institute for Industrial Property, responsible for patents in the country) on software patents. This paper provides concrete legal arguments against software patents, both in general and within Brazil specifically, and highlights the many issues identified in the current procedures adopted by the INPI regarding software patent applications.

The study is titled uma contribuição do Centro de Competência em Software Livre da Universidade de São Paulo CCSL/USP em conjunto com Centro de Tecnologia e Sociedade da Fundação Getúlio Vargas do Rio de Janeiro - CTS-FGV (contribution by the USP Free Software Competence Center in partnership with the FGV Technology and Society Center) regarding the document:

Procedures for the examination of patent applications involving inventions implemented by means of computer programs”

submitted to the Public Request for Input by the Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial do Ministério do Desenvolvimento, Indústria e Comércio Exterior (National Institute of Industrial Property, subjected to the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Exchange) - INPI/MDIC
