Banco do Brasil (Bank of Brazil), one of the largest corporate FLOSS users in the world, has started deployment of the same kind of solution on the Nossa Caixa Bank (recently acquired by BB). The first software to power the NCB shall be the BrOffice.org office suite (the localized version of the OpenOffice.org suite), which offers features similar to those of MS-Office. The suite has already been installed on 16 thousand BNC workstations, making it possible to work with the open standard ODF format.
The estimated savings on licensing offered by BB's use of FLOSS, which has opted for this approach since 2003, already surpasses R$100 million. The institution uses Linux in over 80 thousand workstations and 6 thousand branch servers. BrOffice.org is deployed on over 100 thousand computers.
The company is also currently migrating all of their ATMs with FLOSS, a grand total of over 40 thousand machines. At the moment, over one thousand hybrid ATMs (those that support BB and NCB clients) operate on Linux.
