Operating Systems on Software Freedom Day

Joining the Software Freedom Day, an international event by the free software community, the CCSL, together with Sun Microsystems and Locaweb, will host an afternoon on free operating systems this friday, with two very interesting presentations: on Linux-Libre and on OpenSolaris.

Title: The Linux-libre project

Abstract: Linux-libre is a project that aims to publish and maintain 100% free linux distributions, removing software that is usually included without source code, with obfuscated source code, under non-free licences and software that suggests or requires the installation and use of additional non-free software.

Resumo: OpenSolaris is an open source project sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Inc and is initially based on a subset of the source code for the Solaris operating system. Is is a hub for a community development effort where Sun and other developers can collaborate on the creation and improvement of the technologies surrounding operating systems. OpenSolaris source code is expected to find many uses, such as being the basis for future versions of Solaris, for other operating systems, for third-party products and for other distributions. After the speech, OpenSolaris gifts will be raffled off!

Alexandre Oliva is a free software evangelist, member of the administrative counsil of the Free Software Foundation Latin America (FSFLA),GNU developer and compilation engineer at RedHat working with gcc.

Alexandre Borges is a Senior specialist on Solaris, OpenSolaris, and Linux. He works around development, secutity, administration and performance issues with these systems, as instructor and consultant. He is also a researcher on new technologies and other kernel-related topics.
