The second QualiPSo workshop took place in São Paulo on september 5th 2007 at the IME/USP. Check the oficial program for the 2˚ QualiPSo Workshop.

Activities started at 8 am in the Prof. Antonio Gilioli auditorium.

From 8:00 to 8:45, a discussion about the case studies that could be inserted into the project. The following projects were counted:

  • USP's system to collect information and evaluation
  • Computing systems at SBC
  • IEA/São Carlos:
IT, Comunication and Education in physics, biologic, mathematics and computer areas
  • Virtual memory for São Carlos
  • Mobily Computing & Public Health
  • Libraries Management Systems
  • IEA/São Carlos:
    Knowledge difusion web portals
  • Labor Gymnastic: A project associating IME/USP and Physical Education
  • Game development
  • Public management
  • CAD Open source: Archimedes

Computer science profile: Statistics related to each institute's publications. Produces a colaboration graph between writters.

After that, Prof. Maldonado presented the Workshop's program and the participants introduced themselves one by one. Then the opening started: The possible cooperation forms where discussed and the following ideas were more successfull:

  • Creating a web portal for QualiPSo Brazil.
  • Creation of an email groups between colaborators.
  • Atteinment of the web address: www.qualipso.org.br

The project was then described with more details enphasizing which points are planned to be studied here in Brazil with the USP (ICMC, IME and EACH) and the SERPRO collaborators:

  • Legal aspects related to open source software development.
  • Studies relating open source to agile methods.
  • QualiPSo software factory to be used to test and validate accomplished studies.
  • Software Libre Competence Centers with the objective to concentrate and promote knowledge in the area.
  • Exploration and dissemination to transmit the knowledge to the industry.
  • Offer training to companies to make it possible for them to adopt the open source business model.

At 9:15 am started the Agilcoop talk presented by Prof. Kon.

Slides should be available [here].

At 9:40, Hugo presented his talk "Open source agility and quality".

Slides are available [here].

During the talk, some comments and doubts were made:

  • In the Linux kernel case, there is a maintainer that approves or disapproves contributions. Does this goes against the XP's colective code property?
  • Testing applications under development should consider supporting Test Driven Development
  • Christian from USP-São Carlos did a study about the Open source development model and collected some metrics. Hugo should try to read and analyse this work.

10:05 Diogo started his talk about relational object mapping in databases.

Slides should be available [here].

Details and comments are missing.

10:25 Paulo Cheque talked about automated tests.

Slides should be available [here].

Observations:

  • A couple of article have just been published about GUI and Web application testing. Links are missing.
  • Paulo should attend to systematic revision course with Érika.
  • What happens to test quality?

The coffee break started at 10:40 am.

Eleven o'clock Adenilso presented model based tests and Web Services tests.

Slides should be available [here] (in Portuguese).

A few comments about the talk:

  • Formal models that help software development fit perfectly into agile method's idea.
  • Models allow to generate testes with results that can be evaluated. But what if the model is wrong or is not appropriate?

At 11:20 Simone changed a bit her talk to approach problems regarding distributed computing testing issues.

Slides should be available [here].

Questions about the talk:

  • What distributed paradigm (message exchange, shared memory, etc...) is the study's main focus? What are the required changes to adjust the study between paradigms?

Chaim started talking about instrumentation testing around 11:35 am.

Slides should be available [here].

At midday, Érika started the last morning presentation about VV&T.

Slides should be available [here].

Lunch took from 12:15 to 13:45

13:50, Maria Amália (Phd student for the UFPE) presented her interests in open source legal aspects.

It started with a quick discussion about the legal/politic issue in open source software. Free software contributes to the knowledge democratization. What are the required legal cares to ensure the "right" for FOSS development. Intelectual property has two positions in Brazil:

  • Copyrights from the Europeen system. Software production is a spirit creation that materializes with code.
  • Patent's system from the US. Almost everything in the software is patented. Almost meaning nearly everything.

In Brazil, it is still chaos. Rigourously, the European system is the official one. Software follows the copyright rules and must be registered at the INPE as such. There is still a discussion regarding this to allow the software registration. An approach sustains that it is possible to have an exception when the software is built in a physical element. Some say that there is no problem in obtaining a patent to the invention of the device and the copyrights for the software. Others say both things are to stay coupled.

Prof. Delamaro talked about his testing research in the techniques, criteria and tools for the testing development area at 14:05.

Slides should be available [here].

Comments:

  • Links for the database testing articles are missing.

14:25, Ellen started her talk about educational modules development.

Slides should be available [here].

Comments:

  • Think about the ontologies that might be useful.

At 14:45, Monaco talked about free and open source software

Slides should be available [here].

3:05 pm, Viviane talked about Software development processes.

Slides should be available [here].

Comments:

  • What are the odds to insert agile methods into the SERPRO?

Half an hour later Prof. Maldonado introduced the IV ESELAW 2007 - Empirical Software Engineering Latin America Workshop

The early initial program was presented and possible tutorials were discussed:

  • A basic tutorial about instrumental engineering
  • Agile methods
  • Open source
  • Legal aspects

A short coffee break took place at 5 minutes to 4 o'clock.

At 16:20, participants talked about the international QualiPSo conference.

The conference is scheduled to the 16-17 january in Rome. Students and teachers involved should work to submit articles and show the work being done in Brazil to the international participants. Call for paper's limit date is october 30th 2007.

Besides, QualiPSo Brazil should try to get involved as much as possible with the most important open source conferences as well as in more traditional events.

Study groups should get formed to create an agenda with objective plans.

Ten minutes before 5 pm the IEA web portal was presented and a couple videos were shown with the objective to difuse knowledge and generate research interest.

At last, the first QualiPSo Workshop in São Paulo was declared over.

TODO:

Talk about free and open source events (FISL), presentations about legal aspects, etc...

  • Francisco Monaco got responsible to organize the Qualipso's presence at the FISL (shirts and caps).

Take the Coding Dojo to São Carlos Ornigaze thematic discussions about ontologies and open source game development Agilcoop should find other persons working with agile methods in Latin America Marcos ?, Marcelo Campos (argentina), Eduardo Quadros, etc... Someone from SERPRO should be at the december's Workshop
