The scientific journal "Information Economics and Policy", focused on economy as related to information and communication, launched, in December 2008, an issue dedicated to empirical issues in open source software.

CCSL na Campus Party

Campus Party BR 2009 With the presence of about 20 undergraduate and postgraduate including Phd professors the FOSS Competence Center left its mark on the biggest internet event of the Latin America, the Campus Party. The members who attended the event offered speeches and courses in the areas of development and open source software. Our triumph were the grid computing mobilization, coordinated by the professor Wagner Meira from UFMG, he and professor Fabio Kon from IME/USP conducted a speech at the main stage, inviting everyone present to offer computational power for the Folding@Home project


PureData convention in São Paulo

Puredata is an open source tool for programming multimedia works. Much of its development results from a community effort of developers worldwide, who have organized conventions.

The first convention took place in Graz, Austria. The second in Montreal With the support of CCSL, the Third International Puredata Convention - PdCon09 - will take place in São Paulo (july 19th-26th, 2009), with the intent to promote interchange and local development. The format includes the presentation of artistic works, academic works, discussion regarding the interests of the community, and various courses. Submisssions deadline is March 29th, 2009.

QualiPSo Project opens four Competence Centres on Free and Open Source Software

The Qualipso project funded by the European Commission is establishing a world-wide network of Competence Centres, starting in early 2009 with four centres located in Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and São Paulo (Brazil).

New study notes growing adoption of free software

Open World Forum

A new study by Forrester Consulting,by request from Bull, was brought up at the Open World Forum. This study notes a large growth of free software adoption in Europe and to the intention of several companies to increase usage of free software, pointing to a generalized tendency towards free software and reaffirming its professional potential. Several industry sectors were surveyed, such as business services, financial services, manufacturing, telecom and the governmental sector.

Online course on gnu/linux

For those interested in learning the basics of free software and linux, an online course on gnu/linux (in Portuguese) will start on 09/15.

Rails Summit Latin America

Ruby on Rails is a new software technology that alows the creation of flexible database-centered web systems with great ease. Lately, the CCSL at IME has been using this framework, which is free/open source software, in some projects, both for education and research.

INdT Mobility Week at CCSL IME-USP

The IME-USP FOSS Competence Center and the IndT (Nokia Institute odf Tecnology) promote at IME-USP, from 08-25 to 08-29, the Mobility Week with lectures and training on the platform maemo (languages C and Python).
The novelty will be the involvement of designers who will speak on design for software (mobile applications and open source).


3rd Free Software Paraná Circuit at CCSL IME-USP

The IME-USP FOSS competence center receives CELEPAR, informatics enterprise of Paraná government, one of the most active institutions in the production and dissemination of free software in the public sphere, to promote the Paraná Free Software Circuit on August 22 and 23. The event has been done for more than two years itinerantly around Brazil. This year, the stage of São Paulo has the endorsement of IME and the CCSL. Participate!
